The Weekly SliceTip Tuesday - Pick A Ball |
Estimated read time: 56 seconds Welcome to Tip Tuesday. A simple, actionable tip designed to save you shots without changing your golf swing. Let’s get into it. Pick A BallLast week I played in a competition at the golf club. An event where teams of two alternate between using a yellow ball and a white ball. Both players scores count on each hole and it's the total of the combined scores. But here's where it gets interesting. The yellow ball is worth double the points of the white ball. And when you lose the yellow ball, that's it, no more double point holes. A fun competition for keeping Winter golf more interesting. However, the trouble with alternating golf balls each hole, is, unless both players are using the same type of golf ball, it's very difficult to get any rythm going. My white ball was a Taylormade TP5x, which I always use. Whilst the only yellow ball we had in our bags was a Srixon AD333, which I'd found. Each hole, I'd hit a shot and it would perform different to the hole before. More distance. Less distance. Lower flight. Higher flight. I'd then get to the green and struggle to have any feel on the putt. One ball felt soft, whilst the other came off the putter face like a rocket. And it got me thinking. It's time to make a change to your golf grip game. You've upgraded your wardrobe with new styles and designs. But you're stuck using that old SuperStroke grip which looks more Motocross than putting green. So, we decided to create a golf grip that not only performs well (soft, comfortable feel) but also looks great and adds some style to your putter. Meet Welton Golf, your new putter grip of choice.
(Use code WEEKLYSLICE for 20% off!) If we want to have any level of control over the ball on the golf course, the type we use must stay consistent throughout. No matter if it's a Slazenger V300 or a Callaway Supersoft, the ball brand/model should remain consistent at least through 18 holes. All golf balls are built differently. Some harder. Some softer. Some designed for maxiumum distance. And some created for ultimate feel. If you're regularly using a different ball, how can you ever fully know how it will perform off the club? The same golf ball allows you to fully understand your yardages and how far you hit each club. It gives you a more predictable ball flight, so you can become familiar with spin rates and how it reacts in the wind. It allows for maxiumum feel on and around the greens, as you're aware of how it feels off the club face and reacts on the putting surface. Ultimately, seeing the same ball each time can instill a sense of confidence and comfort. Knowing how your ball will perform in different situations removes one variable from the equation and allows you to focus on making a good swing. Yes, it might be tempting to use that nice ball you've found out on the course. And there's no doubt that testing and finding a ball that is right for your specific golf game is always a good idea. However, sticking to one that you trust and are familiar with can bring a level of consistency and confidence to your game that is often underestimated. Try it out and see how it helps your golf game. That's it for Tip Tuesday this week. I hope you enjoyed it and learned something to help your game. Feel free to share it with your golf mates (unless, of course, you don't want them to improve...). I'll see you on Friday for the normal edition of The Weekly Slice. Ed
